This flower bloomed in our backyard a couple weeks ago. It was pretty robust in the morning, but by mid-afternoon had drooped considerably. Its quite large, I'd say the purple pointy thing is about (is that the pistil?) about 12 inches long - so you can kind get a perspective of the size. And the color is pretty close too. Any ideas? Post them in the comments.
I hope everyone is enjoying their summer.

Some kind of cala lily?
The leaves are really very different from cala lillies - we have those in our yard too. Good guess tho.
google "purple anthurium" and then check "images." This is my first try - I'll keep trying later.
It is in the Aroid Family and is a purple anthurium. The owners 3 back Albert & Ethel Mead had several exotic type of flowers in the yard. He was a passionate planter and gardener and loved all different types. Altho this flower is from Hawaii so maybe check with Bailey to see if she planted it maybe since they are from Maui. Beautiful shot by the way...
Hi Rene' - funny enough, Jim and Bailey stopped by last night and I showed it to them, she called it a Corpse Plant - said it stunk pretty bad while it was blooming but I never noticed a smell. From the way she talked I don't think she planted it.
Thanks!
I checked the aroid lead and found a nice page with a lot of information. http://www.paghat.com/voodoolily.html
Fancy!
Charlotte - I looked at some sites with the corpse plant and I don't think this one is big enough. My vote is still for the purple anthurium.
